Robert Wolk won both the day’s races in Formula Volkswagen at Killarney on Saturday. Nicholas van Weely was second both times, and initially led heat one after a blistering start, but was soon hauled in by Wolk. At the start lights in race two Wolk was wise to the challenge and did not allow a repeat, driving off to an uncontested win and his brace for the day.
Dave Perel did a great job standing in for Tato Carello finishing third in heat one ahead of Christopher Shorter, looking better with each outing in his maiden season in Formula Volkswagen. In heat two, behind Wolk and van Weely, Werner Scholtz took third place, the current Midas F1600 champion also showing ever improving form. David Perel was fourth, putting in a good day’s work after some years away from single seaters.
In Class A of Midas F1600, Keegan and Jason Campos locked out the front row in qualifying, with James Temple just behind them, with Graham Hepburn in fourth. At the lights these four set off on an 8 lap thriller, with the Campos siblings and Temple passing and re-passing each other at will, while Hepburn kept an eye on developments. Over the line, Jason beat Keegan by 0,023 sec with Temple a scant half-second further behind. Hepburn was fourth. In Class B Rick Morris took the laurels ahead of George Ferreira and Matthew Miller.
Kyalami winner Dillon Miller was hampered by a misfire which could not be traced and it also plagued him in heat two, which meant a day to forget for him. In the second race, the front four again resumed their scrap from heat one and it was just as good, second time around. Jason again crossed the line in first place, with Keegan content to just keep James from getting to the front and threaten his brother.
Graham Hepburn again kept a close watch on the leading trio, and the four of them finished in the same order in which they’d done in race one. George Ferreira took an easy win in Class B, after Rick Morris retired with gearbox trouble. Matthew Miller went one better than in the morning’s event and finished in second place ahead of Alex Gillespie and Allen Meyer. Current Class B champion Ian Schofield was absent from the meeting.
