Porsche has taken the wraps off its new Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, positioning it as the most powerful variant in the third-generation Cayenne range.

The flagship model – offered in both standard SUV guise and so-called coupé form – employs a plug-in hybrid set-up offering total system outputs of 500 kW and 900 N.m.

The twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 engine offers 404 kW while an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission adds 100 kW. The result is a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,8 seconds (that's three-tenths quicker than the standard Cayenne Turbo) and a top speed of 295 km/h.

In addition, Porsche claims the new Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid boasts an all-electric range of 40 km (up to a speed of 135 km/h), along with a combined fuel consumption figure as low as 3,7 L/100 km (and an electric efficiency claim of 18,7 kWh/100 km).

The lithium-ion battery is installed underneath the loadspace floor and has a capacity of 14,1 kWh, with Porsche saying it can be fully charged within 2,4 hours with the standard 7,2 kW onboard AC charger when using a 400-volt connection with a 16-amp fuse. The charging process takes a claimed six hours from a conventional domestic socket with a rating of 230 volts and 10 amps.

The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé both ship standard with items such as the firm's dynamic chassis control, electric roll stabilisation, adaptive three-chamber air suspension, torque vectoring plus, a rear-axle differential lock, ceramic composite brakes and 21-inch lightweight alloy wheels.

The hybrid range now also includes the new Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé (using the turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 engine as a base), which offers total system outputs of 340 kW and 700 N.m, plus an all-electric range of up to 43 km. The Cayenne E-Hybrid in standard body style, meanwhile, is also back in the line-up.
