Audi S5 handed 700 N.m TDI engine … but not in South Africa

Following a similar move with the new S6 Sedan and S7 Sportback, Audi has handed its S5 Coupé and S5 Sportback a 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel heart in Europe. According to the local arm of the Ingolstadt-based firm, however, this oil-burning option is “currently not planned” for South Africa.

Instead, the local market will stick with the turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 TFSI unit, which offers a petrol-flavoured 260 kW and 500 N.m.

So, what are we missing out on? Well, the TDI engine produces 255 kW and 700 N.m, with an electric-powered compressor providing “strong off-the-line performance” and a mild-hybrid system enhancing efficiency.

The six-cylinder diesel mill sees the S5 Coupé hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 4,8 seconds, with the five-door Sportback taking one-tenth longer. The electronically limited top speed for both is 250 km/h.

As with the petrol models, the TDI-badged versions of the S5 feature all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
