BMW in Europe has announced it plans to expand its X5 range with the addition of a new entry-level four-cylinder turbodiesel engine later in 2019.
The new X5 xDrive25d employs a 2,0-litre oil-burner developing 170 kW and 450 N.m, and mated with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.
The Munich-based firm claims the new base model will sip fuel at 5,7 L/100 km.
A new X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid model is also on the cards, powered by a combination of a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and an electric motor, which together generate a system output of 290 kW. This electrified X5 will accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 5,6 seconds. In addition, BMW says it will cover up to 80 km on electric power alone.
Neither of these two new derivatives has been confirmed for South Africa.
