New GWM P Series (or ‘Poer’) bakkie: extreme off-road concept revealed

Great Wall Motors has lifted the covers off an extreme off-roading version of its new P Series bakkie, which will be known as the “Poer” in international markets.

Unfortunately, the Chinese firm has released very little detail about what we’re assuming is a concept.

When the standard P Series was first revealed at Auto Shanghai 2019, the company confirmed three versions would be offered, including an off-road variant. But this latest concept – which has been dubbed the “Black Bullet” – is far more extreme than the production version, featuring all sorts of off-road goodies.

Revealed at Auto China 2020, the new concept gains a bespoke grille, an aggressive bonnet design and a chunky new front bumper featuring orange trim, towing points and a winch.

The company has furthermore added a snorkel, massive wheel arches, chunky side-steps and what appears to be a roof storage system with integrated LED elements. Of course, new alloys wheels wrapped in Nitto “extreme terrain” tyres are also part of the package.

Round back, you’ll find a hefty rear bumper (again with towing points and an integrated winch) as well as large-diameter tailpipes. And inside? Well, rather bizarrely for an off-road vehicle, the concept features plenty of white upholstery, plus yet more orange detailing.

There’s no indication of what’s happening under the bonnet but we suspect GWM has simply retained the standard version of the Poer’s turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol engine (or turbodiesel engine of the same displacement), linked to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
