Hyundai’s new 291 kW mid-engined concept hints at upcoming halo model…

Hyundai has taken the wraps off its new RM19 Racing Midship Sports Car concept, which represents “future brand aspirations” for the Korean firm’s high-performance N division.

Interestingly, the two-door concept is mid-engined, something Hyundai describes as a “key differentiator providing supercar-level handling balance”, with drive sent to the rear axle.

This RM19 concept is, of course, the latest evolution of the RM series (which Hyundai describes as an “engineering testbed”), preceded by the RM14, RM15 and RM16.

Drawing 291 kW from its turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, Hyundai says the RM19 is expected to hit 60 mph (97 km/h) from standstill in “under four seconds”. The firm furthermore suggests electrified powertrains could fairly easily be dropped into the concept.

The prototype measures 4 319 mm long, 1 945 mm wide and 1 354 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 672 mm. It rides on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 245/30 rubber up front and 305/30 tyres at the rear.

“The RM19 sports car signals future brand aspirations for Hyundai’s high-performance N brand, solidly moving N into the prestigious arena of supercar-level performance,” said Thomas Schemera, executive vice president and head of Hyundai Motor Group’s product division.

“Hyundai N will not only increase heartbeats per minute via powerful internal combustion engines, but also through the instantaneous torque and environmental sustainability of electrified powertrains moving forward,” he added.
