When the new Audi S6 Sedan and S7 Sportback were recently revealed, the big news was the fact this pair of performance models would be offered with 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engines in Europe. Audi South Africa, however, has now confirmed the local market will instead receive TFSI units.
This will see South Africa align with markets in the United States, Asia and the Middle East, where the S6 and S7 will be fitted with a version of Ingolstadt’s familiar 2,9-litre V6 petrol mill.
Audi SA also confirmed to CARmag.co.za the S6 Avant is not destined to be offered locally.
Expect the twin-turbo six-cylinder to offer some 331 kW and 600 N.m in the SA-spec versions of the S6 and S7, just like it does in the RS4 Avant and RS5 family. However, since these new models are larger and heavier, they obviously won’t be quite as quick as their smaller, full-fat RS-badged siblings (although performance figures have yet to be revealed).
But, like the TDI derivatives built for Europe, the Ingolstadt-based firm says the V6 petrol models will be equipped with both an electric powered compressor and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, for added performance and improved efficiency.
South Africa is, of course, still awaiting the arrival of the standard A6 and A7, so timing of the new S6 Sedan and S7 Sportback has yet to be confirmed…
