New Toyota Hilux Legend 50 in South Africa: more details drop

By: Ryan Bubear

CARmag.co.za has already brought you pricing for the new Toyota Hilux Legend 50 derivatives (as well as for the Hilux GR-Sport) ahead of the launch in South Africa, and now we can add a few more details.

As we’ve already pointed out, as many as 13 derivatives will be offered – across the single-, xtra- and double-cab body styles, and in 4×2 and 4×4 guises – each based on the familiar Raider trim level.

The local arm of the Japanese firm has confirmed Legend 50 models will boast “both technological and design updates”. Indeed, they will feature an updated (gloss-black) grille, a redesigned front bumper, a new 18-inch alloy wheel design, a black styling bar, roof rails and side-steps. A tow bar and mudguards will also be fitted as standard. Furthermore, Legend 50 models will be offered in a choice of eight colours.

In addition, “Legend 50” badging has been added to the doors, tailgate and styling bar, as well as in the cabin, where you’ll also find a larger multimedia display (upgrading to an eight-inch touchscreen, with satellite navigation on some derivatives). Buyers will also benefit from keyless entry (with push-button start for xtra- and double-cab variants), along with partial leather trim and a gloss-black instrument cluster.

The “Legend 50” badge, of course, celebrates half a century of Hilux sales in South Africa and follows the Legend 45 that launched locally back in 2014.

As a reminder, twelve of the 13 variants will draw their urge from the Japanese firm’s 2,8-litre turbodiesel engine, which generates 130 kW (plus 420 N.m in the case of the six-speed manual derivatives and 450 N.m in the case of the six-speed automatics). Take note that the package cannot be ordered in conjunction with the 2,4-litre oil-burner or the base 2,7-litre petrol engine.

The 4,0-litre V6 petrol model, meanwhile, will top the locally built range, priced at R712 100 (making it a little more expensive than the aforementioned Hilux GR-Sport). This engine generates 175 kW and 376 N.m, channelled to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.
