New Toyota Quantum: nine-seater VX flagship arrives in South Africa!

By: CAR magazine

Toyota South Africa Motors has added a new flagship model to its Quantum range, with the nine-seater VX variant offering “almost limousine-like” levels of comfort.

The new SA-spec Quantum VX – which appears to share much with the Granvia unveiled in Australia in July 2019 – slots in at the very summit of the now ten-strong local range. The price for this long-wheelbase derivative? Some R843 600. A nine-service/90 000 km service plan is standard, along with a three-year/100 000 km warranty.

Powered by the Japanese firm’s familiar 2,8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine (here offering 115 kW and 420 N.m to the rear axle via a six-speed automatic transmission), the newcomer is set apart from standard Quantum variants by a large chrome-effect grille featuring three horizontal slats and flanked by standard LED headlamps. A thin chrome-effect strip, meanwhile, links the LED foglamps in the lower bumper.

There’s more chrome-effect trim on the exterior door handles and side-mirror caps (the mirrors boast power adjustment and blind-spot monitoring), and yet more garnish at the rear, along with “VX” badging and LED elements. A set of 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/60/R17 rubber ships standard.

Inside, you find a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row, two more individual seats in the third row and a bench for three in the final row. There’s also independent rear climate control and “multiple USB ports” for passengers sited back there.

Quilted leather upholstery is used throughout, while some seats are equipped with a power-adjustable backrest and a fold-out ottoman. There are also power-operated sliding doors on either side of the vehicle and Toyota’s audio-visual navigation touchscreen infotainment system.

The Quantum VX furthermore features an array of driver assistance features, including pre-collision safety system with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, “high-speed” active cruise control, lane-departure alert, road sign assist and automatic high beams. Rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and nine airbags are also included.
