Hyundai has taken the wraps off the facelifted i30, handing its updated hatchback revised styling, extra features and a new turbocharged 1,5-litre engine in Europe.
Of course, we say Europe because the standard i30 is no longer offered in South Africa, with only a limited number of the i30 N hot hatch (itself due an update – likely including the addition of a dual-clutch transmission – soon) available on local shores.
Still, it’s interesting to see what SA is missing out on. Most intriguing, perhaps, is what’s happening under the bonnet. At the base of the range in Europe, Hyundai offers a “newly developed” naturally aspirated 1,5-litre engine. This unit generates 81 kW and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission.
At the summit of the line-up, meanwhile, is a new turbocharged 1,5-litre petrol engine delivering 118 kW to the front axle. This T-GDI engine comes standard with 48 V mild-hybrid technology and can be paired with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
A turbocharged 1,0-litre engine with 88 kW is offered towards the middle of the range, with a choice of cog-swappers (the same two as the 1,5 turbo above). This powerplant will furthermore be available with an optional 48 V mild-hybrid arrangement. There’s also a 1,6-litre turbodiesel engine available with either 85 kW or 100 kW (the latter version standard with the 48V mild-hybrid arrangement).
As before, an N Line trim option will be available, now featuring what Hyundai describes as an “even sportier look”. In addition, the i30 N Line models gain tuning updates for suspension and steering.
Inside, there’s a new seven-inch digital cluster and 10,25-inch touchscreen, while wireless smartphone charging is on the cards, too. European markets furthermore gain an improved Hyundai SmartSense safety package.
