Volkswagen details entry-level 1,0 TSI engine option for new Golf 8…

Volkswagen in the United Kingdom has detailed an entry-level 1,0 TSI engine option for the Golf 8.

The turbocharged 1,0-litre three-pot slots in at the bottom of the Golf 8 range in that country, below a pair of 1,5-litre petrol units, two 2.0-litre diesel mills and the 1,5 eTSI mild-hybrid option.

Of course, this turbo-triple already does duty in the outgoing Golf 7 range here in South Africa, where it delivers the same 81 kW to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

It’s not yet clear whether this unit will again be offered locally once the Golf 8 range has touched down early in 2021, with VW SA earlier stating the line-up would include a 1,4 TSI engine as well as the familiar EA888 2,0 TSI unit in the Golf GTI and Golf R (in different states of tune, naturally).

Interestingly, the Wolfsburg-based firm’s UK division says a mild-hybrid version of this engine with a dual-clutch transmission will be “available at a later date”.

Anyway, the 1,0 TSI Golf 8 detailed here is capable of hitting 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 10,2 seconds, before topping out at 203 km/h.
