Toyota has launched the Copen GR Sport in Japan, handing subsidiary Daihatsu’s two-seater convertible some added spice.
Billed as the new “entry model” in the GR range, the front-driven Copen has benefitted from a focus on body rigidity and suspension tuning. The former was improved by adding a front brace and changing the shape of the centre brace, says the firm.
The suspension spring rate, meanwhile, was “optimised” and combines with model-specific shock absorbers to deliver what Toyota terms “a smooth ride with supple movement”. Furthermore, the electric power steering was revised.
Inside, you’ll find Recaro seats and a new triple-meter display, along with piano black trim for the centre cluster. An electrically operated roof ships standard.
Toyota has opted not to fettle with the lightweight Copen’s engine, leaving the peak power output of the turbocharged 660 cm3 three-cylinder petrol engine unchanged at 47 kW. Transmission options include a five-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission with seven virtual steps.
