More details surrounding the next-generation Audi A3 reveal information such as dimensions, potential model line-up and a frugal new engine currently under development.
A report in German motoring publication Auto Motor und Sport has revealed that the 2012 Audi A3 will come in four variants, which will then be divided into two pairs with differing dimensions and wheelbases.
According to Audi design chief, Stefan Sielaff, the new A3 line-up will mirror that of the A4 and A5 models; with plans afoot for a 4-door model in a similar vein to the A3 e-tron concept pictured above, a Sportback and a Cabriolet to join the 3-door model.
From what could be ascertained at this early stage, the 3-door and Cabriolet variants will measure 4,26 metres in length and feature a wheelbase measuring 2,59 metres. In saloon guise, the A3 will measure 4,44 metres in length with a 2,63 metre wheelbase – to put that into perspective, the current A3’s wheelbase sits at around 2,58 metres with an overall length of 4,2 metres.
The new car’s styling is likely to incorporate numerous design cues from the A1, such as a more distinctive nose with sharper design elements and possibly the more compact taillamps.
In addition to the saloon body shape, another new addition to the A3 fold will be a new 1,4-litre petrol engine developing 103 kW. This unit, which has already been earmarked for Volkswagen models due in early 2012, will feature the company’s TSI twin-charging (super- and turbocharging) technology as well as cylinder deactivation.
This system shuts off cylinders 2 and 3 during constant light speed/load conditions (1 400 r/min-4 000 r/min, 25 N.m – 75 N.m) and will reportedly save up to 0,4 litres/100 km of petrol in the NEDC driving cycle. Other frugal powerplants currently under consideration for the A3 include a 3-cylinder diesel and a CNG (compressed natural gas – possibly dual-fuel) unit.
