Most European manufacturers are known for testing at the Nurburgring race track in Germany. The really hardcore go racing at the Green Hell and if you are Volkswagen you build a special one-off model called the Golf 24. Volkswagen’s motorsport boffins have developed this radical looking special to contest the 2011 Nürburgring 24 to be held from June 23-26.
The race-only model boasts a 2,5-litre, turbocharged engine that pumps out 324 kW and 540 N.m of torque – or about the same as a hotted up drag-racing CitiGolf. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a sequential six-speed transmission.
The last time a Golf participated at the legendary endurance race was in 2007 when a front-wheel drive model finished an impressive eighth place overall. Golf24 has been undergoing testing at Portimão in Portugal and Italy in Vallelunga ahead of its competitive debut on home soil.
“With the new Golf24 we are continuing our successful commitment at the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The event enjoys huge popularity, is one of the true classics in motorsport and, due to its extreme distance and unique race track, also represents a very big technical challenge,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “With our spectacular Golf we want to provide an additional highlight in front of a large audience – right in time for the 35th anniversary of the GTI.”
Do not expect to see a Golf 24 on your local VW forecourt any time soon, but if you do be sure to let us know.
