Two former employees of the Isipingo Roadworthiness Test Station near Durban will be sentenced later this month after being found guilty of 676 charges of fraud. Meanwhile, Northern Cape police arrested two traffic officers and a clerk on charges of fraud and corruption.
The two Isipingo men, Mahendra Ramsunder, 32, and Venokanthan Perumal Govender, 22, issued certificates of roadworthiness without the vehicles undergoing the necessary tests. “In many instances, the vehicles were not even present at the test centre when the roadworthiness certificates were issued,” KZN transport department spokesman Logan Maistry said.
The pair were scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, but Ramsunder took ill and sentencing has been postponed until February 26.
Meanwhile, reported that the Northern Cape police’s Commercial Crime Unit arrested three Entenjeni municipality traffic officers and a clerk.
A police spokesman said the four people are accused of issuing false drivers’ and learners’ licences. The spokesman, Tony Modise, said they allegedly issued the licences without testing the recipients. “It is suspected that between 500 and 600 people throughout the country could have benefited from this scam between 1998 and 2002,” Modise said.
After an initial appearance in the local magistrate’s court this week, they will be in court again on May 25.
