The production version of the F10 M5 is set to be unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The M5, through its past four generations, has always been a rear-wheel drive performance saloon and the news of an optional all-drive version might come as a shock to some and a surprise to others.
If you have a look at BMW’s global product offering, one will note that in countries such as the USA and Canada the 3 Series, 5 Series and even the 7 Series are offered with xDrive, this is BMW’s brand name for its all-wheel drive system. One of the reasons these cars are available with all-wheel drive in some countries are due to the heavy winter conditions.
Since the technology is available to BMW as well as used in some of its other M products such as the X5 M and X6 M, it somehow makes sense that the company will have an M5 xDrive as an option.
This step, should it be put in place, will only enhance the M5 product range and open it up to even more competition.
