BMW’s eagerly awaited 4 Series Coupé has been spied shorn of much of its camouflage in Germany.
While the recently revealed 4 Series Coupé Concept has granted us a good idea of how the production model will pan out, the pictured test mule has brought the final article into clearer focus.
The concept’s billowing sheet metal treatment on the doors, as well as its neat inset metallic door handles, have made way for more conventional items. The taillamps also appear to have been toned down a bit from those of the concept, adopting a different LED strip arrangement and an outline more reminiscent of the 3 Series.
The nose is pretty much textbook 3 Series with minor tweaks to the grille and bonnet strakes. The concept’s aggressive front and rear aprons also appear to have made way for more solid, sculpted items and the glasshouse appears to be more prominent than the narrow glazing that adorns the concept.
While it may have been toned down somewhat from the concept, the production 4 Series is still a handsome looking article. We may, however, see more of the concept’s aggressive visual elements make their way onto the M4.
This apex model’s make-up and powertrain still remains the subject of speculation. The smart money lies with a considerable weight saving over the E92 model (possibly thanks to a carbon-fibre roof and aluminium bonnet) and power coming from a twin-turbo 3,0-litre straight-six engine. This unit is believed to develop the same power output as the outgoing V8 (309 kW) but torque will take a hike northwards.
The standard 4 Series range will probably feature an engine line-up similar to that of the present E92 model. Expect upper-end four-cylinder units from the present 3 Series (320i and 328i) along with the turbocharged 3,0-litre from the 335i.
