Zuffenhausen-based Porsche AG has announced that it will launch a new coupé based on the new Boxster towards the end of the year. Dubbed the Cayman S, the reptilian-named newcomer will up the company’s product line-up to four separate ranges.
The new product, powered by a six-cylinder boxer engine producing a maximum output of 217 kW, will be rear-wheel driven and slot between the 911 Carrera and the Boxster S. Scheduled to be introduced to the South African market early next year, the Cayman S (an artist’s impression of which was recently penned by CAR automotive artist Duwyne Aspeling, see right) is expected to be priced above the Boxster S but below the 911 Carrera.
Porsche Centre South Africa managing director Toby Venter said: “This sporting two-seater will show outstanding style and superiority in its looks and appearance. The exceptional design of the car is accentuated by muscular design features conveying a strong feeling of both power and agile driving behaviour.”
“The cayman belongs to the crocodile family. (But it is) a relatively small and very nimble athlete. And precisely this creates a clear resemblance not only to Porsche’s new sports car, but also to the company as a whole: The cayman is acknowledged as a highly specialised hunter with strength and agility, quick reflexes and clear target orientation,” the company said in a statement.
The Cayman S’s 3,4-litre powerplant will be mid-mounted in front of the rear axle. Porsche said it hoped the model would “respond directly to steering” and produce “very dynamic behaviour in bends” by virtue of its favourable power-to-weight ratio.
