reported that 13 suspects were arrested on charges of car theft, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest. They expect to make more arrests, including a number of policemen.
They have also recovered 40 vehicles and returned some of the cars to their owners. The police said the vehicles had been issued with false clearance certificates from the Umtata traffic licensing department, which has been shut down. Six traffic officials were suspended and arrested last month for allegedly issuing false licences.
