The 23-year-old Cape speedster who was fined R15 000 for doing 198km/h in a 60km/h zone would have had his licence suspended in Australian and the United Kingdom and may even have faced a jail sentence.
Basheer Karriem’s licence was not suspended because he argued that he needed it to continue his job as floor manager of an Epping business. He was charged with reckless driving and speeding.
A spokesman for the British Consulate General in South Africa told the Karriem would definitely have lost his licence in the United Kingdom, while the spokesman for the Australian High Commission said his licence would have been suspended for at least a year.
“Most definitely he would have lost his licence and would probably also have faced a jail term,” said the Australian High Commission spokesman.
In a similar incident to Karriem last month, a Scottish man was jailed for five months after being caught driving at more than twice the speed limit. Jason McAllister hit 251 km/h in his BMW M3 between Aberdeen and Dundee. He was also banned from driving for four years.
CARtoday.com reported in August last year that Australian authorities were considering installing speed-limiting devices on the vehicles of repeat speeding offenders.
