Politician Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a decree to make his state a leader in the mass introduction of environmentally friendly hydrogen fuelled cars. What on earth will he do with his Hummers, though?
The Californian governor signed the order to encourage the use of fuel cells after driving to a special fuel station in a hydrogen-powered Toyota.
The plan to build hundreds of hydrogen filling stations “starts a new era for clean California transportation", Schwarzenegger said. If only he would remember that he is meant to be the official spokesperson for renowned gas-guzzler Hummer.
Schwarzenegger has been urged by environmentalists to “abandon his Hummer and go hybrid”. The former action star has owned up to six Hummers at one time and has apparently raised his proposal to the Hummer division of General Motors to engineer a clean vehicle.
But the company will not build a hydrogen version of the Hummer for him or anyone else.
David Caldwell, a spokesman for Hummer, said, “We would never do a Hummer on any energy source that would not perform like a Hummer is supposed to perform.”
Arnie must be hoping the hybrid Hummers will be available by 2010 when his clean-fuel plan should be mainstream.
