The 1 Series has received mixed response so far and with more mainstream styling, the 2 Series hopes to correct that. It will share its facia and front cabin with the 1 Series and feature a regular boot.
BMW has trademarked the names 216i, 220i, 225i, 218d and 220d and is expected to launch them in 2006.
The 2 Series range will start with the 1,6-litre entry-level model using a 85 kW four-cylinder engine. A more powerful 111 kW 2,0-litre petrol derivative and the two 2,0-litre diesel options producing 91 kW and 122 kW will also be available.
In the 225i, BMW is expected to debut its new 2,4-litre four-cylinder Valvetronic engine developing approximately 164 kW. Except for the entry-level model, the entire range will come with the choice of six-speed manual or semi-automatic transmissions. The base 216i will have a five-speed gearbox. A cabriolet version of the 2 Series is anticipated for 2007.
The separation of the hatch and coupé models into the 1- and 2 Series will probably continue with the next generation 3 Series which, it is expected, will be badged the 4 Series.
The names M1 and M2 have also been registered and could be among the fastest BMWs ever, though there is still much speculation about the engines. Debates rage over whether they will feature 2,4- or 3,0-litre engines, though they will probably have 220+ kW on tap.
A mid-engined performance car, based on the 1 Series, could be in the pipeline as well, although these machines probably won’t appear until 2007.
