The next generation Porsche 911 may only be unveiled for the first time at the Paris Motor Show in September, but Porsche is planning a major brand attack over the next few years.
Codenamed the 997, left-hand-driver versions are said to be going into production in August. The 997 is just one of a new breed of Porches due out over the next three years. More than 10 new Carrera variants, stretching from the Carrera 2 to a GT2 replacement, are planned for the period.
The 997 has been labelled as being evolutionary and greater resembles a major facelift than a brand new car. Inspired by the 993 of the mid-90s, the 997’s most obvious changes are external.
Oval headlights set will once again be set apart from the indicator signals and fog lights.
New mirror housings, Cayenne-style pull-out door handles, altered taillights and revised tail pipes are visible. Three large air ducts mimicking those of the 996 Turbo provide additional cooling for the car’s front-mounted radiators. Wider front and rear fenders complete the 997’s well-formed appearance.
Inside, the 997 received a Cayenne-inspired cabin and dashboard, with instruments housed under a single binnacle.
For the first time on the 911, buyers will be able to order a six-speed Tiptronic with steering-wheel-mounted shift buttons, or a dual-clutch gearbox. A revised six-speed manual gearbox is standard.
reported that the new body comes with an updated version of the 3,6-litre flat-six cylinder engine used in the current 911 version. Power has been upped from 235 kW to 257 kW and the top speed is expected to push 290 km/h.
However, a more powerful S version is also waiting in the wings.
The 911 S has been modelled to imitate the Boxster S and comes with bulkier exterior styling, an engine with more bite and higher levels of standard equipment.
Direct injection is planned, along with a ten per cent improvement in economy and power. Capable of producing just under285 kW it is unlikely that this car will available before a facelift for the 997, planned for 2007.
