Audi South Africa has expanded its A3 sports hatch range by adding four models powered by state-of-the-art two-litre FSI petrol engines. The introductions follow the launch if the 103 kW 2,0 TDI late last year and will culminate in the launch of A3 flagship – the 3,2 V6 quattro with the option of a DSG transmission – towards the end of 2004.
The FSI range consists of four models in two trim executions (Attraction and Ambition), which are covered by a five-year/100 000 km Freeway maintenance plan including Audi Assist personal and emergency services.
The new two-litre engine FSI engine features a four-valves per cylinder layout, actuated by low-friction roller cam followers, and a continuously-adjustable intake camshaft. The unit utilises direct petrol injection incorporating a common rail injection system and a single-piston high-pressure injection pump. FSI allows for the precise amount of fuel to be injected into the combustion chamber dependant on the load placed on the engine, Audi says.
Under full load, FSI ensures that the entire combustion chamber is filled with an even mix of fuel and air. When the engine is under part load only, the induction stroke of the piston draws in air. At the precise microsecond before combustion, the FSI injector aims fuel directly at the centre of the chamber. The fuel air mix is thus denser towards the centre and weaker towards the edges.
The 2,0 FSI develops 110 kW and maximum torque of 200 Nm at 3 500 r/min thanks to the engine’s variable intake manifold and dual-branch front pipe. When mated with a manual six-speed gearbox the A3 2,0 FSI will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 9,1 seconds and has a top speed of 211 km/h.
The FSI power unit’s biggest advantage is its fuel economy. Audi claims a average fuel consumption figure of 6,9 litres per
100 km (in the combined cycle) for the 2,0-litre unit.
