Audi will launch the latest addition to its A5 family – the A5 Sportback – at the upcoming Frankfurt Show. The Sportback is expected to reach the South African market before the end of the year and prices are expected to start at roughly R390 000. The range will comprise two FSI and three TDI-engined variants and will be offered in front- and all-wheel drive configurations. The newcomer stays true to its roots, the A5 coupĂ©, by sporting a sleek contour, frameless doors and long, flowing rear section. Moreover, Audi claims this five-door version offers station wagon-like boot capacity and saloon-like comfort.

1. It’s evident that this apple doesn’t fall far from the A5 tree.
2. The biggest departure from the A4/A5 is the addition of a hatchback – clearly inspired by the traditional Avant profile.
3. Frameless doors definitely add to the flow of the Sportback.
4. An overwhelming array of creature comforts have been made available to the driver/front passenger.
5. The Sportback’s most glamorous pose – note the diffuser in the rear bumper and prominent swathe lines.
6. A prominent spoiler is integral to the design of the tapered rear.
7. Could there be an influence of BMW X6 in the outline of the hatchback?
8. Commodious rear seats easily accommodate two adults.
9. Replete with award winning TFSI power-plant.
10. A generous 480 dm3 of boot capacity makes Sportback as practical as an Avant.
