As the new Audi R8 will be revealed next year, Audi USA has released the limited edition R8 Competition. As a run out model, there are several tantalising options added to the car. The result is a more striking car compared to the standard model.
It kicks off with the 5,2-litre V10 engine that develops 425 kW, up from the the standard V10’s 386 kW, and even up on the V10 Plus’s 405 kW. This means the 0-100 km/h figure drops to only 3,2 seconds. Top speed also climbs 3 km/h from the R8 Plus’s figure to 320 km/h.
The rest of the standard features on the car has been added to mimic the R8 LMS race car, a car which has won endurance races at Daytona in the USA as well as at the Nürburgring in Germany.
These include carbon-fibre trim for the front splitter, winglets on the front bumper, door-sill inlays, side mirrors, side blades, rear wing, rear diffuser to the interior trim.
The result is a rather unique R8, as well as the most powerful Audi production car to date. No surprise then that Audi will only be building 60 units for the American market, which is likely to sell out quite soon.
This is not the first limited edition Audi R8 though. In 2010 Audi released the R8 GT, which was 100 kg lighter than the standard R8 V10. This car also implemented several carbon-fibre parts, offered 412 kW, but still used Audi’s rather slow R tronic transmission. The dash to 100 km/h took 3,6 seconds, although top speed was also a claimed 320 km/h. However, 333 units of this car was produced.
