Audi recently debuted the hot S3 variants of its current A3 range. As is usual the hottest version of the family is saved until the very end. This heavily disguised RS3 test mule was caught out in public, giving us an indication that it could be set for debut really soon.
The larger air-intakes in the front bumper, larger alloys and exhaust tips on either end of the bumper clearly claim the performance model as opposed to others in the range. In the last A3 range, the RS3 was only available in Sportback body style, which is why the first of the family to boast the RS badge will be the five-door variant.
Some speculation still exists regarding the powerplant. Some sources indicate that the same five-cylinder force-fed motor as the predecessor will be employed, albeit in a higher state of tune. What we do know is that power will be fed through a dual-clutch transmission to all corners via Audi’s well-known quattro system.
The performance stakes in this small car category have certainly been raised in this last generation. Mercedes A45 siblings and BMW’s upcoming M2 have certainly upped the power game and should Audi wish to compete, or lead the segment, then it will have to dish up well in excess of 250 kW.
Reports also suggest that the RS treatment will be applied to the recently added A3 Sedan, which should suit young families.
We sense a very entertaining triple test coming up when the RS3 does eventually heat up SA roads.
