The concept, which Audi has officially stated will form a stepping-stone towards an all-electric successor to the A2 due in 2013, will utilize a similar aluminium spaceframe to the now-defunct compact hatchback.
The design will be more angular and in keeping with the likes of the A1 than that of the relatively curvaceous original A2 and the overall dimensions (3 800 mm in length, 1 690 mm in width and 1 490 mm in height) will be 26 mm shorter, 17 mm wider and 63 mm lower than its predecessor.
Among the concept’s most noteworthy stylistic touches are a blanked-pout version of the company’s signature single-frame grill, a near-vertical hatch and a glass roof that alters its opacity according to the ambient light conditions – probably utilizing a similar system to that of Mercedes’ Magic Sky Control roof, which is optionally available on the new SLK.
The function of light plays a substantial part in the as-yet-unnamed concept’s overall design. For instance, the headlamps make use of micro-reflectors to produce a powerful, glare-free light while the adaptive brake lamps feature laser diodes that can project an emergency triangle on the road if required. The car’s flanks are also accented by LED strips that run along the shoulder line (or ‘tornado line’ in Audi parlance) that act as both a visual element of the design as well as a form of full-body turn indicator.
Audi has not yet divulged any firm details surrounding the concept’s powertrain set-up, but it has been suggested that full-electric and range-extender hybrid units are under consideration – possibly taking a tilt at BMW’s i3 eco-flavoured city car, which will also make an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
