Chery South Africa has just introduced automatic versions of its QQ3 and J5 – two of five new models destined for our market this year.

First up is the Chery QQ3 8,0 TX AMT. This model features a Magnetti Marelli-develop 5-speed electronically controlled transmission. Dubbed EZ Drive, this transmission system uses an electronically operated hydraulic unit coupled to the existing mechanical transmission that automatically controls the clutch and gearshift operations. EZ drive can be switched between a semi-automatic setting that allows the driver to change gears, and a full-automatic that lets the ‘box do the shifting.
This transmission is mated with a 3-cylinder 812 cc petrol engine that develops 38 kW at 6 000 r/min, and 70 N.m of torque between 3 500 and 4 000 r/min. According to Chery, this model consumes 5,2-litres/100 km.
Specification for this model includes power steering (standard across the QQ3 range), colour coding for the electrically-adjustable side mirrors, bumpers and spoiler, electric windows all round, and 13-inch aluminium rims. The automatic QQ3 adds a R6 000 premium to the TX-spec model, costing R83 900.
The J5 2,0 TX Automatic, is a new addition to its compact saloon stable. This model features a four-speed automatic transmission with manual override and “winter” preset for slipper road conditions. Power is provided by the company’s 2,0-litre in-line four cylinder ACTECO engine that was jointly developed by Chery and Austria AVL. This unit produces 95 kW of at 5 500 r/min, and peak torque of 178 N.m at 4 500 r/min.
Among the specified features on this model are dual airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse park distance control, electric mirrors and windows, central locking, air conditioning, leather upholstery, and a 6 CD shuttle. The recommended retail price is R169 900, adding a reasonable R10 000 premium to the manual TX.
Like all cars in the Chery lineup, these two newcomers come with a 3 year/100 000 km warranty.
