Audi has added its eagerly anticipated Avant station wagon to its a4 lineup. It has also introduced new satellite navigation packages for all A4s.
The range comprises the 1,8T (manual and automatic/multitronic), 1,9 TDI in both five- and six-speed manual plus the 2,5 TDI quattro tiptronic.
The 1,8T (turbo), the only petrol engine available, develops 120 kW and 225 N.m of torque.
The range of TDI engines starts with the injector unit 1,9-litre four-cylinder. Audi claims a maximum output of 96 kW and 285 N.m of torque for the five-speed manual, but says a six-speed model will be introduced soon after as a running change.
The V6 TDI power unit displaces 2,5 litres and gives 132 kW and 370 N.m torque. The engine is coupled to Audi’s quattro drivetrain. Transmission is a five-speed tiptronic / automatic transmission that includes an ‘S’ sport setting.
ESP, with hydraulic brake assist, is standard. Other standard features are front and side airbags and Audi’s Sideguard head airbag system.
The new Avant is based on the A4 saloon, with a high waistline and wedge shape. But the new Avant offers more space. The overall exterior length of the new A4 Avant is 4,54 metres. The wheelbase is 33 mm longer than its predecessor, and rear passengers receive 43 mm more knee-room. The increase in width to 1766 mm also means that there’s 17 mm extra elbow room in front and 29 mm more in the back.
The smooth, flat luggage compartment, with a loading width of 1 000 mm, is made possible by the compact design of the rear axle already featured in the current A4 saloon.
The luggage compartment of the new A4 Avant offers 52 dm3 more load space than before, up from 390 dm3 on the predecessor to 442 dm3.
Audi also offers Satellite Navigation on the A4. There are two systems:
- The Audi Base Navigation, which has a voice with arrow display in the instrument cluster, toggle and controls in the centre consol and a navigation CD shuttle in the boot.
- The Audi Plus Navigation, which has a centre console radio, map, centre instrument cluster arrow and voice directions. It has a colour monitor to show road maps (located in the radio area of the centre console). TV reception is also available.
The Audi Plus Navigation is not available on TT Roadster and Coupé.
The CD will cover Gauteng, Durban, East London, Cape Town and the main N routes between the mapped areas.
