Car rental company Avis has renewed its contract with the Airports Company SA to retain its prime position at the nine state-owned airports for a further five years.
In terms of the contract, Avis would retain the best-positioned rental kiosks inside the terminal buildings and receive the largest allocation of parking spaces at the Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, East London, Kimberley, Port Elizabeth, George and Upington airports.
According to Grenville Wilson, Avis’ chief executive, the contract was in line with the groups Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) plans, with BEE procurement being one of the clauses of the contract renewal.
“The airports are our single most important marketplace, and our strong presence there is a very significant asset, not only in attracting business but even more importantly in enabling us to handle large customer volumes without compromising our service standards,” he said.
Wilson said the renewal of the contract entrenched the considerable competitive advantage Avis already enjoyed at the airports due to the conspicuous and convenient positioning of its kiosks and the size of its support facilities.
