The design of Volkswagen’s Phaeton luxury saloon has won the 2003 “iF Gold Award” from the German “iF International Forum Design”. It is the only car to win the accolade this year.
A jury made up of experts from 32 countries examined 1 800 products this year, but only 25 of them qualified for the “iF Design Award”. The Phaeton was the only car among the 2003 winners.
“The Phaeton’s design is not based on any existing model, but represents an avant-garde approach, power and elegance. Our team succeeded in creating an exceptionally individualistic, contemporary luxury car in the Phaeton. We are proud that the quality of our work was considered worthy of the 2003 “iF Design Award”, this is renewed confirmation of the results from an official, highly professional source,” said Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen’s head of exterior vehicle design.
Following the Phaeton V6 and Phaeton W12, the new Phaeton V10 TDI will be launched in Germany on April 4. VW said the new model’s 10-cylinder diesel engine with twin turbochargers and an output of 230 kW makes it the most powerful diesel-engined saloon car available anywhere in the world.
The Phaeton V10 TDI has a claimed top speed of 250 km/h and the engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
