Bentley has released a series of sketches previewing a drop-top concept version of its Mulsanne that the company is mulling for production.
The announcement was made at this year’s Pebble beach Concours d’Elegance, where likes of such bespoke creations as the McLaren X-1 concept and BMW Zagato Roadster were revealed at the weekend.
The Mulsanne Convertible, despite wearing the concept tag, will probably be used to gauge public perception of such a model in order to ascertain production viability. Such a model would, in effect, give the Crewe carmaker a rival to the likes of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and possibly a convertible version of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
This model will probably utilise a shortened version of the platform underpinning the current Mulsanne coupe and power is likely to be provided by Bentley’s 6,75-litre V8 developing around 395 kW.
Should the Mulsanne Convertible get the go-ahead from the Bentley board, it will follow in the footsteps of such illustrious models as the Park Ward S1 Drophead Coupe form the 1950s to more contemporary models such as the Azure and Continental GTC.
