BMW has given the public an idea of what the upcoming M4 will look like by revealing the M-Performance line for the 4 Series. The M4 is the official replacement for the M3 coupe and will make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show early next year.
The M-Performance package adds more aggressive styling to the regular 4 Series with the addition of a deeper front bumper with a carbon-fibre splitter, bigger air ducts, LED headlamps, blacked-out chrome trim on the grille, side air vents, window surrounds and exhaust outlets. The pack also adds carbon-fibre side-mirror housings, sporty exterior decals, a carbon-fibre spoiler and a new rear bumper. There are also sporty interior trim upgrades such as a three-spoke steering wheel and sports seats.
With this package, three of the four engine variants get an increase in power and torque. The 2,0-litre, four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine in the 420d gets an increase of about 12 kW and 40 N.m, putting the total power and torque outputs at 147 kW and 420 N.m respectively. In the 428i with the M-Performance pack, the 2,0-litre, four-cylinder direct injection unit pushes out 200 kW and 390 N.m of torque. The top-of-the-range 435i with its 3,0-litre, six-cylinder petrol unit gets a power increase of 25 kW to make the total output 250 kW, while torque gets an increase of 50 N.m to stand at 450 N.m.
The 4 Series M-Performance pack will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, while the international launch of the regular 4 Series unfolds over the next couple of weeks. CAR deputy editor, Mike Fourie, will be at the international launch. Follow him on Twitter @MikeF_CARmag for immediate updates.
