Along with the 2012 introduction of four new/revised engine options to the local 5 Series range (520i, 528i, 530d, and 535d), BMW South Africa is also set to add an all-new ActiveHybrid model to the 5 lineup.
The new model will feature a 40 kW electric motor mated with the 225 kW/400 N.m twin-scroll turbo inline-six petrol engine found in the 535i. The two can be disengaged via a clutch to allow for an all-electric mode when conditions allow. In this configuration the new 5 Series ActiveHybrid is able to operate in full-electric mode at speeds of up to 60 km/h (i.e. within city limits).
A 96-cell lithium-ion battery, stored below the luggage compartment, has a useable capacity of 6,75 kW.h.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is used and BMW claims an average fuel consumption of between 6,4 and 7,0 litres/100 km, with emissions between 149 and 163 g/km (depending on tyre specification).
Using the additional torque from the electric motor the BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid boasts a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 5,9 seconds.
Together with a standard start/stop system, a new ECO PRO mode is added to the usual driver-selectable Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ driving themes. In this new mode the vehicle is able to coast, with its engine shut-off, at speeds of up to 160 km/h. Good news for those planning any trans-Karoo journeys.
The 5 ActiveHybrid launches in South Africa during the first quarter of 2012.
