Word from French website L’Automobile is that BMW will build a station wagon version of their next generation 6 Series. To be called the BMW 6-Series Gran Tourer, it will be more of a shooting brake than a true wagon and will go up against Merc’s CLS Shooting Brake when the next gen. 6 appears in 2017.
This will be the practical yet equally luxurious Gran Tourer variant of a 6-Series range that will again include Coupe, Convertible and GranCoupe derivatives.
As the rendering shows, its design will be influenced by the GranCoupe but with an extended roofline, electrically operated tailgate, and a lowered ride height. Speculation is that engines in the next gen. 6 will include four-, six- and eight-cylinder units and possibly even a three-cylinder engines. What you can be sure of is that the chassis will be considerably lighter – likely in the region of 100kg over the current generation.
