This also ensures that there is a diesel variant in all BMW’s model ranges in South Africa.
BMW spokesman Richard Carter says it is tricky introducing a diesel into the top range of the market. “We have brought it in anticipation of diesel fuel availability improving in South Africa,” he says.
The three-litre, 6-cylinder turbodiesel engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which already features on the 735i and 745i.
The maximum output of the 730d is 160 kW at 4 000 r/min, while maximum torque is 500 N.m between 2 000 and 2 750 r/min. The top speed is claimed to be 235 km/h and the manufacture says it reaches 100 km/h in 8,0 seconds.
According to BMW, fuel consumption is 8,5 litres/100 km with an approximate range of 1 035 km from the 88-litre tank.
BMW say they managed to get the noise levels done without compromising performance by splitting up the injection process into several injection phases per operating cycle. Fuel is now injected up to four times per cycle in a dual pilot phase, in the main injection phase and in the post-injection process. BMW’s electronic damper control is also standard. It adjusts damper forces to provide a smoother ride.
The digital diesel electronics have been upgraded to the next DDE5 generation, which offers 10 times the previous computer power and capacity. It is also in a position to process commands for programmable cruise control. This allows the driver to enter any speed desired in the cruise control, and changing it at will by moving a lever on the steering column.
DDE5 also controls the automatic engine start function and the new fast preheating system. This system allows the engine to start immediately from temperatures down to –5oC, which means there should not be a noticeable difference in starting when compared with a petrol engine.
The 730d is equipped with the same standard features as the other 7 series models, including iDrive with voice control, control display and a navigation system.
Other standard items are: Nasca leather, Cherry wood trim, servotronic steering, multi-function leather steering wheel with steptronic controls, multi-level cruise control, comfort start, ABS & DBC, electromechanical parking brake, bootlid with soft close automatic and eight airbags.
It also features park distance control, rain sensors including automatic headlight control, Xenon lights, climate control, and CD-shuttle for 6 CDs
The 730d is equipped as standard with styling 93 double spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels with 245/50 R18 tyres.
Included in the price is a standard five-year/ 100 000 km Motorplan maintenance contract, which covers all services. There is also Free Roadside Assistance, tow-in and emergency medical assistance.
