BMW’s X family of SUVs, or SAVs (Sports Activity Vehicle, as the Bavarian brand likes to call this range of products) is about to get bigger with the introduction of the X7. The new seven-seater will be the biggest and most expensive X model when it goes into production in 2016.
The X7 will be produced at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, where the X5 and X6 are also built. The announcement, made by BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, formed part of a recent celebration of 20 years of manufacturing at the plant and coincided with the start of production of the all-new X4.
The X7 will use an extended version of the X5 and X6’s platform to accommodate a third row of seats, and will reportedly only be offered with six- and eight-cylinder engines to cement its premium status. It will go on sale in all BMW markets.
BMW will invest in excess of R10 billion in the Spartanburg facility between now and 2016 to meet the expected demand for the new X4 and the X7.
