A black diesel 7-Series has taken BMW to its target of one million cars sold in 2002.
reports that the German manufacturer said in March it was planning to increase sales from about 900 000 last year to one million in 2002. This was reached this week with the delivery in Munich of a carbon black-metallic 730d Individual to its new owner.
BMW said it had sold 976 300 cars between January and November. This is 17 per cent more than by the same stage last year.
BMW’s sales were boosted by the huge demand for the new Mini. They sold 134 000 Minis up to November this year.
However, BMW said it wants to limit sales of the Mini to 24 000 in the United States to ensure exclusivity and maintain a high resale value.
“We don’t want it to be on everyone’s shopping list,” Jack Pitney, Mini’s US general manager, told .
Pitney said BMW had sold 18 606 Minis in the US from its debut in March until October, with about 75 per cent of the cars sold before they reached the showroom. He said about 85 per cent of Mini buyers had not bought a BMW before.
Though the new look of the 7-Series was criticised by the media, BMW believes the public has accepted the car. BMW said 46 200 7-Series cars were sold by the end of November.
“The 7-Series is making an important contribution to the success of the BMW Group,” the company claimed in a statement.
