BMW will increase the prices of its models by between five and 8,5 per cent from July 1.
BMW South Africa will increase the prices of its models by between five and 8,5 per cent from July 1 2002.
BMW said the increase was due to the “earlier devaluation of the rand”. According to John Chantler, Manager of Product Planning and Pricing: “The freefall of the currency which began in 2001 has necessitated that we try and ‘make up’ some of the 30-odd per cent devaluation of the rand that we’ve suffered over the past year.”
This is BMW’s third increase this year, but the manufacturer explained that it had not wanted to hit customers with one large price hike. “While some manufacturers and importers ‘slapped’ a once-off 20-plus per cent increase on their car prices in January, BMW has instead chosen to graduate the increase, thus easing the burden on customers.
“The latest price hike merely brings BMW SA more into line with its competitors. It’s worth noting, however, that while Mercedes-Benz will have effected four price increases by July 1, BMW will have only had three,” said Chantler.
Chantler said he could not say if there would be further increases this year. “It all depends on the future performance of the rand. Unless the currency can recoup some of its earlier losses, further price increases cannot be ruled out,” he said.
