The BMW Group has issued a recall for previous-generation 5 Series and 6 Series models built between 2003 and 2010 that will affect 11 780 local vehicles.
The recall regards a potential issue with the battery cable cover inside the boot. If this unit has been incorrectly mounted, there is a potential for problems ranging from an electrical system malfunction, the vehicle failing to start and, in exceptional cases, cable charring and fire.
Thus far, BMW has not been aware of any customers suffering any of the aforementioned maladies, but the company’s internal quality control measures have identified a potential for problems arising from the fault.
The recall, which affects 1,3 million vehicles globally, will apply to 11 780 cars in South Africa. The models in question include all 5 and 6 Series models (Ex6) built between March 2003 and September 2010. This includes all previous-gen 5 Series saloons, M5 Touring and saloons, as well as all variants of the previous-gen 6 Series (Coupe, Convertible, M6 Coupe and M6 Convertible).
BMW will inform all affected parties in writing to bring their vehicles to the nearest approved BMW dealership for repairs to be done. The repairs will take around 30 minutes and there is no cost to the customer.
