BMW South Africa has announced a recall of some 50 000 previous-generation 1 Series, 3 Series, Z4 and X1 models. This forms part of an international recall first announced after an investigation by the Canadian automotive safety agency, Transport Canada, into a possible electrical fault. To date, only petrol-engined models are involved.
BMW South Africa spokesperson, Guy Kilfoil, has reportedly stated that the problem appears to involve an electrical cable to the distributor. “A connector on this cable can vibrate causing some friction, which impairs electrical supply to the vehicle. That normally happens at parking speeds and then one won’t be able to restart the car.”
