According to , the German manufacturer increased its workforce by 2,9 per cent to more than 100 000 workers in the first eight months of this year. BMW will continue to hire more staff.
Worldwide employment expanded by more than 2 800 employees to 100 112 until August this year.
Most of the new workers are in Germany, where the company’s employment grew 3,6 per cent to 75 462. It added 800 new workers at the research and development centre in Munich and 800 at the factory in Dingolfing, Germany.
“We will in the next year hire qualified job candidates, particularly those with technical and information technology backgrounds,” said Ernst Baumann, a management board member in charge of personnel.
BMW plans to sell more than one million vehicles this year and aims eventually to displace Mercedes-Benz as the top luxury vehicle maker.
BMW also said it will invest R4,2 billion to expand its Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant, where it builds the X5 sport-utility and the new Z4 roadster.
BMW said the expansion, which will create 400 new jobs, will increase capacity at the plant to more than 150 000 vehicles annually from more than 120 000.
