The BMW Group has received approval for its entry into the China car market in a joint venture with Chinese manufacturer Brilliance.
The project proposal has been approved in written form and released by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. The next step will be the submission of a detailed feasibility study on the joint venture contract prepared by the BMW Group and Brilliance.
Start of production is scheduled for the second half of 2003, with initial annual production capacity pegged at a total of 30 000 BMW 3- and 5-Series vehicles.
The location of the joint-venture factory will be Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province in the North-East of the People’s Republic of China. Shenyang is one of the most important industrial centres of the country.
The BMW Group has been present in China with a representative office in Beijing since 1994. In the first six months of 2002, the company sold 6 946 automobiles in China, up 22,7 per cent compared to the previous year. Market entry into the People’s Republic of China is an important part of the BMW Group’s Asian strategy.
