BMW has released details on the local range of its brand-new third-generation X5. It’ll be available from January.
The range kicks off with the 225 kW/400 N.m xDrive35i at R769 900. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds and uses a claimed 8,5 litres/100 km. The equivalent Mercedes-Benz ML350 costs R778 353 and the Porsche Cayenne V6 is R794 000.
Next up is the 190 kW/560 N.m xDrive30d at R781 309 (read a driving impression here). Its figures are 6,9 seconds and 6,2 L/100 km. The ML350 BlueTec is priced at R801 693 and the Cayenne Diesel at R831 000.
The third X5 model is the 230 kW/630 N.m xDrive40d at R886 014 (5,9 seconds; 6,2 L/100 km). There are no direct rivals for this model in terms of power or price.
The sole V8 option is the 330 kW/650 N.m xDrive 50i, which costs R984 517, reaches 100 km/h in 5,0 seconds and uses 10,4 L/100 km. The ML500 costs R965 369 and the Cayenne S a comparatively low R878 000 (although the BMW and Benz are far better equipped).
The current flagship until the inevitable X5 M arrives is the 280 kW/740 N.m M50d (5,3 seconds; 6,7 L/100 km) at R1 031 848. The Cayenne S Diesel costs R971 000.
All models feature a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.
