Ferrari has called Juan-Pablo Montoya “mad” for an overtaking incident between the Williams driver and Michael Schumacher at the European Grand Prix on Sunday.
Montoya went around the outside of Schumacher at the Nurburgring’s bottom hairpin on lap 43. The two cars touched and Schumacher spun off the trap into the gravel trap. He waved for help from the marshals who pushed him out of the trap and back into the race. He finished fifth.
Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn was furious after the race. “It was mad of Montoya. He could have taken both of them off the circuit,” said Brawn. “It was a very crude overtaking move and he has done it several times before. He is not a classy driver in that respect.”
But Montoya said he had given Schumacher enough space. “I don’t know what was wrong with Michael but in the corner he was very slow. I went down the hairpin and I went outside and we touched. I gave him plenty of room but I wasn’t going to give him all the track,” the Williams driver said.
