South African motorists are likely to get a bit of a break from rising petrol prices, but those in diesel-powered cars will not be so lucky.
On Friday morning, the average under-recovery on petrol was at 1,3 cents. SA Petroleum Industry Association director Colin McClelland told CARtoday.com that this meant the petrol price will either not increase or, if it does, by a very small amount.
But McClelland said users of diesel and paraffin faced a big increase. Diesel was under-recovering at 16,4 cents per litre, while paraffin was under-recovering at 19,2 cents per litre. He said an increase of about 18 cents a litre was likely for diesel and paraffin.
“Diesel and paraffin are more expensive in December and January due to high demands in the northern hemisphere’s winter, while more motoring is done in the northern hemisphere summer in June and July. These world market trends suit us as we do more motoring in December and January and need paraffin in the winter months,” he said.
Price increases will come into effect on November 6. The petrol price was increased by 12 cents a litre in October and nine cents in September.
