The transparent layer covering the coloured paint on your car’s surface is regularly scratched by road grit, by rubbing while washing and by the scrapes that come with daily living.
The German company Bayer has developed a formula called 2K-PUR Clear Coat that makes this top layer “heal” itself.
Under testing, a car’s body panel painted with the new coating was scratched until it lost quite a bit of its sheen, but after being warmed, the scratches became virtually unnoticeable.
According to , a spokesman claimed the was able to heal “right before your eyes.”
“Now we’re working on making the scratches disappear in cold weather,” he continued.
Unfortunately, the coating won’t be used in production models until the long-term tests are completed, though initial tests have shown that the paint finish can withstand being “washed” with sand and even sprayed with acid.
