The die-hard Toyota Camry has passed the global production mark of 10 million units at the Australian plant near Melbourne, while the South African-built Corolla was Australia’s best selling car in September.
The Australian plant is one of only 10 to produce the Camry, and has the second largest output outside Japan. The four-cylinder Camry has dominated the medium car segment in Australia since 1994 and has close to 50 per cent of the market share in its category.
Currently sold in 100 countries, the Camry is the highest volume vehicle export from Australia and has over the past four years also been exported to South Africa.
Meanwhile, September saw the first time that the imported Corolla was the best selling car in Australia after 4 950 units were sold. Toyota currently heads the Australian passenger car market in three categories with the Echo/Yaris light car, the Corolla in the sub-compact, and the Camry in the compact segments.
Almost 800 000 Corollas have been sold in South Africa since it was first introduced in 1975.
