Porsche is recalling 100 Cayennes locally after international quality tests found some rear passenger seatbelts to be defective. Some local Volkswagen Touaregs may be affected by the recall, as well.
More than 40 000 Porsche Cayenne and 60 000 rival Volkswagen Touareg sport utility vehicles have been recalled worldwide to check for faulty rear seatbelts in models produced between October 1, 2002 and December 17, 2003.
In recent Porsche quality tests, it was established that the shaft pin forming the connection between the rear seatbelt buckle and the anchorage fitting may have been incorrectly riveted.
The two German manufacturers jointly developed the Cayenne and Touareg models and the vehicles share some parts. The driver and front passenger seats have not been affected by the fault and no incidents have been reported thus far.
The recall affects all Porsche Cayenne models in the affected period, of which only 100 need to be checked in South Africa.
The vehicles concerned require a 20-minute workshop check and all those checked thus far have been cleared, Porsche SA said. Cayenne owners with queries could contact either the Porsche Centre in Johannesburg on 011 686 9000 or Cape Town on 021 914 8200.
Since the VW Touareg was only launched in March of this year, Volkswagen SA’s Songezo Zibi told CARtoday.com that very few, if any, local Touaregs would be affected.
” If any of our customer’s vehicles need to be checked, the owners will be contacted. Luckily, the affected vehicles are easily identifiable.”
